I’ve picked out some of the best festival and town events in Cornwall to celebrate New Year and included what’s on in each, the ‘vibe’ and anything else worth noting…

St Ives: New Year’s Eve – Fancy Dress Street Party & Fireworks

Who is it for: Those wanting a big fancy dress street party!

Personally, I think St Ives is ‘the one’ when it comes to Cornish New Year celebrations. Starting as a small local event, word has spread and every year the fancy dress celebrations get a little bigger. In fact, it is said that it is the third largest fancy dress party in the UK, after London and Edinburgh.¹

There are always new year’s eve fireworks on the harbour front and plenty of places serving food and drink in town.

Recommendation: Book somewhere to stay in advance (not last minute!) and as close to the town centre as possible that has parking. So you can relax and enjoy the night – because it does draw the crowds, from all over the South West!

Newquay: New Year’s Eve – Parties, Events & Fireworks

Who is it for: Those wanting to party the night away!

Newquay is similar to St Ives in some respects when it comes to New Year celebrations in Cornwall. They both organise fantastic firework displays in the harbour and they both have people filling the street in fancy dress. However, what Newquay also offers is some alternative ways to spend the evening with many local hotels and venues putting on fabulous events. For example, Wax Watergate, at Watergate Bay are hosting a Hogwatergate New Year’s Eve fest. Yes, you’ve guessed it! A Harry Potter themed evening with butter beer and a Hogwarts inspired meal.²

Recommendation: Find an event, book a place, and then walk down to the harbour to see the New Year’s Eve fireworks. A combination of fun, fresh air and fireworks by the water.

Falmouth: Family-Friendly New Year’s Eve in Cornwall

Who is it for: Those looking for a more low-key eclectic mix of events

Again, like St Ives and Newquay, Falmouth also puts on a great firework display when the clock strikes midnight. However, unlike the two north coast towns mentioned above, Falmouth is really more a big mix of many events that collectively bring the town to life.

Being a Falmouth girl, through and through, I’d suggest doing a little research before you head to town, and because there is so much on offer, you’ll find something perfect for your way of celebrating New Year’s. Venues such as The Cornish Bank host live music, hotels and restaurants offer fine dining experiences. Alternatively, if you’re looking for a pub with a great atmosphere, The Working Boat makes a great choice as it has an unbeatable view of the New Year’s Eve firework display.

Recommendation: Don’t plan your New Year’s celebrations in Falmouth with too much detail as the night will unfold naturally and be fun wherever you end up!

Best Places to Watch Fireworks

I’ve touched on a couple of the best places in Cornwall for New Year fireworks. However, there are a couple more and some extra information including parking tips as well as the best places to watch them from.

St Ives

Where: The firework display is in the main harbour. This means that you’ll be able to see them from pretty much anywhere in the centre of town!

How to get there: The best way to enjoy the fireworks in St Ives for New Year’s Eve is by having a place to stay where they also have private parking. Alternatively, a good option would be to either get there super early and park at the Station Car Park or Trenwith Car Park because it is slightly on the edge of town but with plenty of parking.³

Falmouth

One of the best spots to watch fireworks in Cornwall for New Year’s in Falmouth is on the green just below Stratton Place. You can stand right next to the water and have a perfect uninterrupted view. The green here is open to anyone, and naturally slopes down towards the sea. This makes it a perfect viewpoint to count down to New Year’s and see the fireworks at midnight.

Parking-wise, I’d suggest arriving to town early finding a space in the Quarry Carpark. Alternatively, you might be lucky and find street parking nearby.

Fowey

Another contender for the best fireworks displays for New Year’s Eve in Cornwall is Fowey. If you’re looking for front-row seats and a smart evening out, The Royal Fowey Yacht Club hosts a black tie dinner with fine dining and fizz at midnight.⁴ Alternatively, find a spot along the Town Quay and you can enjoy the fireworks display at midnight, sparkling in the sky and reflecting in the waters below.⁵

Parking in Fowey: The main car park is on Hanson Drive and is around a five minute walk into town, which is no bad thing when town is busy and full of NYE street celebrations. It also has plenty of spaces available.⁶

Romantic New Year Ideas in Cornwall

Padstow

Padstow is one of Cornwall’s most picturesque seaside towns, with its pretty cobbled streets, cosy cottages, wonderful food and drink venues, and idyllic harbourside views. Throw in some New Year’s Eve fireworks and a glass of champagne and you have yourself a perfectly romantic New Year’s Eve celebration in Cornwall! Either spend the evening here, or make a weekend of it, and start the new year with full romantic vibes!

Penzance

This arty coastal town offers many romantic ways to celebrate the New Year. Its cocktail bars, boutique hotels and art galleries makes this a lovely choice if you’re looking to do New Year’s in Cornwall a little differently this year.

Best Pubs, Bars & Nightlife

Every town has a great choice of pubs, and often you don’t need to book. If you’re looking for a casual night out in Cornwall to celebrate New Year’s Eve, then a pub night is your best bet. Our advice is to find the town you like the look of most, and then find the couple of local pubs here. It is that simple. However, if you’re looking for more of a night out, we have a couple of ideas up our sleeve:

Skybar in Hayle

Skybar has partnered up with Sandy Acres, Hayle, to hold a big Après-ski New Year Eve party. The night has a retro ski vibe, with DJs, street food vans and plenty in the way of dance floors and drink choices.⁷

Cathedral Masquerade in Truro

This popular Masquerade Ball has been hosted in Truro Cathedral for several years now, and is back for New Year’s Eve 2025, by popular demand. The cathedral makes an incredible New Year’s Eve venue and the party itself includes drinks and nibbles on arrival, street food options, a bar and a silent disco until 1:30am.⁸

Accommodation Options for New Year in Cornwall

There are a couple of ways you can enjoy celebrating New Year’s Eve in Cornwall, if you’re choosing to come and stay for a night or a few days.

If it’s a one-night-away type of evening you’re looking for, some of the local hotels put on special evenings, so you can enjoy a night away but without having to go out-out.

For example, The Alverton in Truro, hosts a fabulous black-tie dinner in its beautiful Great Hall for New Year’s Eve and often offers some great deals this time of year.⁹ If you’re looking for something a little more alternative, try Camelot Castle Hotel, Tintagel. The hotel itself is on its own estate and their New Year’s celebrations are taken very seriously, with elegant dining, sparkling decorations throughout the hotel, roaring fires and a fabulously warm atmosphere.¹⁰

Another type of popular accommodation in Cornwall for New Year’s is a holiday home, and for good reason. If you’re looking for a few low-key days by the coast, and to see in the New Year with a coastal walk and some fresh air, then this is the perfect option. Travel Tips & Getting Around Cornwall

Overall, Cornwall New Year travel is not too bad. If you get close to popular town centres on the evening of New Year’s Eve you’re going to have trouble parking. However, generally speaking, you will not be met with heavy traffic during the festive period in Cornwall.

Top tip: don’t try and park in a town centre on New Year’s Eve. Always find alternative ways, either by using public transport or staying locally.

Safety Tips & Weather Considerations

The New Year weather in Cornwall can be unpredictable. So, our advice is to take many layers, including waterproof ones, especially if you plan to be outdoors.

If you’re close to the sea, it may look tempting to jump in at New Year’s but the sea is extremely cold this time of year and it is not safe for anyone to be in the water at night. There is always the opportunity to swim on New Year’s Day at one of the many popular sea-dipping spots, such as St Agnes or Perranporth.
